Shopify Editions Fall '26, explained for Plus and headless stores

· 5 min read

Shopify Editions Fall ’26, called Exponential, is Shopify’s collection of product updates and announcements. For Plus and headless teams, the most useful changes to investigate span Hydrogen, checkout, Markets and app maintenance, including an App Store token deadline.

For implementation planning, explore our Shopify Plus development and Sanity services. This guide uses Shopify’s Fall 2026 Edition, checked 29 October 2026. “Announced” means no availability label was captured; it does not mean a feature is live for your store. Confirm eligibility and timing with Shopify.

TL;DR

  • Hydrogen adds storefront capabilities and a Vercel deployment path.
  • Rollouts bundle scheduled changes across channels and markets.
  • Checkout and market cart changes have different rollout statuses.
  • AI shopping, themes and analytics have new announcements to assess.
  • Check app tokens and script tags now; the App Store deadline is before January 2027.

Hydrogen and headless

Status: Announced. The Hydrogen 2026-10 changelog describes the new Hydrogen as generally available.

What it is: Shopify describes customer accounts, predictive search, built-in agent skills and one-click Vercel deployments. Vercel Shop is a Next.js storefront built on Hydrogen and maintained by Vercel.

Who it affects: Teams building Hydrogen or Next.js storefronts, including those using Sanity.

What to do: Review account and search journeys and your deployment workflow before planning an upgrade. See our headless Shopify agency approach. Shopify source.

Rollouts

Status: Announced.

What it is: Schedule launches, events or experiments bundling theme, checkout configuration, catalogs and discounts. Shopify describes scheduled changes and A/B tests across headless builds, POS, Google Shopping and the Shop app; catalog price and publishing changes can roll out across markets and roll back after a promotion. The Admin API can query active rollout resources and subscribe to change webhooks.

Who it affects: Teams coordinating campaigns across channels and markets.

What to do: Map dependencies and test the rollback and integrations before scheduling a campaign. Shopify source.

Checkout

Status: Rolling out soon for custom fields and tiled payment methods; Coming soon for the stacked form, Apple Pay by QR and per-checkout metaobjects. Other items are Announced.

What it is: Shopify describes text, date, checkbox and choice fields; tiled payment methods; and a stacked form. Apple Pay by QR is planned for browsers including Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Functions can read delivery-option metafields; per-checkout metaobject access is coming soon. Updated Checkout Kit embeds checkout in web, native mobile and agentic experiences.

Who it affects: Checkout, payment and app teams, including headless teams using embedded checkout.

What to do: Check availability for each feature and test against existing customisations and payment journeys. Shopify source.

Markets and international

Status: Announced, except market cart preview, which is Coming soon.

What it is: Managed Markets offers international prices including guaranteed duties and taxes with flat shipping rates. Shopify describes shipping options by region or company location, return and cancellation rules by market, and a coming market cart preview. Storefronts can launch in Arabic, Hebrew or Urdu; Shopify also describes 13 additional languages.

Who it affects: International and B2B teams managing markets, shipping and localised storefronts.

What to do: Review market settings, returns and translations with operations teams; check availability before planning around cart preview. Shopify source.

B2B

Status: Announced.

What it is: The Algolia app can show B2B buyers only products in their catalog at negotiated prices. B2B catalog CSV exports include vendor details in each row.

Who it affects: Wholesale teams using catalog-specific pricing and search.

What to do: Check integration requirements and test a buyer’s catalog and pricing. See our Shopify B2B services. Shopify source.

AI shopping and discovery

Status: Announced.

What it is: Shopify describes selling in Google Search, including AI Mode, and Gemini with Shopify checkout. Catalog can show markdowns and their amounts in agentic experiences; merchants can check Catalog eligibility and approve facts, policies and FAQs shared with agents. The Universal Commerce Protocol /ask endpoint answers questions grounded in published business facts; WebMCP tools cover product discovery, carts and checkout guidance, and agents can surface retail locations.

Who it affects: Teams managing product data, AI discovery and store integrations.

What to do: Check eligibility and review published facts and prices before relying on an agent experience. Explore our AI agents services. Shopify source.

Performance and themes

Status: Announced.

What it is: Shopify says online store pages receive only the CSS they use. Its new theme architecture describes Liquid blocks, typed contracts, partial updates and built-in Tailwind styling.

Who it affects: Theme and storefront teams reviewing performance and development workflows.

What to do: Test your own pages and integrations rather than assuming a particular performance gain. See our Shopify speed optimisation service. Shopify source.

Analytics

Status: Announced.

What it is: Shopify describes smarter bot filtering, unified user journeys and consent-aware visit counting for sessions. Apps can write analytics annotations through the GraphQL Admin API.

Who it affects: Teams comparing session reports or maintaining reporting integrations.

What to do: Review report definitions before comparing periods, and evaluate annotations for meaningful changes. Shopify source.

Custom apps

Status: Announced.

What it is: Shopify says apps must migrate to expiring tokens before January 2027 to stay listed on the Shopify App Store. Apps can no longer create or update script tags and must migrate to theme app extensions or web pixels.

Who it affects: App developers and store teams responsible for app integrations. The listing deadline is specifically about the Shopify App Store; do not assume it applies identically to every custom app.

What to do: Inventory apps, token handling and script-tag dependencies now, then check the migration requirements for each app. Shopify source.

What to do this quarter
